Humanitarian and Relief

Since early 2000 Aviacon has been a major airlift supplier for humanitarian agencies and the UN peacekeepers providing ad-hoc charters, as well as long-term solutions for a number of UN organizations, including the World Food Programme (WFP), Department of Peacekeeping Operations (DPKO), Humanitarian Response Depot (UNHRD) and the Children’s Fund (UNICEF).

 

Over the years Aviacon has been many times involved in ad hoc and large-scale humanitarian relief flight operations for the governments, international NGOs and other aid providers.

 

As from 2004 to 2007, one of Aviacon’s Ilyushin-76 aircraft was permanently based at the UN logistics base (UNLB) in Brindisi, Italy, operating under the UN Humanitarian Air Service (UNHAS) banner.

 

The aircraft was on permanent standby either in Brindisi or within 48 hours of “reactivation” depending on demand. Painted in the full UN livery and operated under Aviacon callsign, it has flown over 2400 hours in support of humanitarian activities worldwide.

 

In 2011-12, 2016-2017 Aviacon’s IL76s were contracted by the UN Mission in Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO) through the UN Procurement Division.

 

Aviacon’s fleet was positioned in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). As part of the UN fleet it provided airlift logistic support for election campaigns of 2011 and 2016. We carried 1,116 tonnes of election material to all major cities of the country (Gbadolite, Mbandaka, Lubumbashi, Gemena, Kananga, Kindu etc.

Ilyushin-76  can do without most of the ground equipment necessary for a regular civil plane. Thanks to its rear ramp that allows roll-on and roll-off loading of wheeled and tracked vehicles and onboard equipment the plane allows unassisted loading and off-loading of heavy cargo.

Aviacon’s overseas operations are based upon our  flight support team, which is run and manned 24/7/365.

It is capable of providing all-inclusive flight support (FPL, weather forecasts, traffic rights, airport arrangements, fuel uplifts) and ensures global coverage of the company operations.

IL76 – a  versatile ramp freighter

IL76  cargo hold is fully-pressurized and has a titanium floor with fold-down roller conveyors.

Main cargo deck is equipped with 4 overhead cranes running the full length of the cargo hold, each of which with lifting capacity of 3,000 kg, and two winches.

A hydraulically-operated rear loading ramp itself can be used as a lift, with a capacity of up to 30,000 kg. It allows roll-on and roll-off loading of wheeled and tracked vehicles.

Although the cargo  deck is compatible with international standard sea containers and pallets, the plane, originally designed as a military transport, proved  to be also ideal  for loading offloading of rolling stock, trucks, vehicles,  out- and oversized gears, dangerous goods (including UN Class 1 cargo).
